Area description : Loulé is 12 kilometers from the coastline of the “Golden Triangle”, an area that includes the luxury complexes of Vale do Lobo, Quinta do Lago, and the village of Almancil. Loulé is a lively commercial city that retains its traditional charm and reputation as the Algarve’s arts and crafts capital, despite its commercial development.
The city center is steeped in history. Its castle dates from the 13th century and was built on a site originally occupied by the Romans. Its main church, the mother church of São Clemente, which also dates back to the 13th century, was built in place of an old mosque.
The Loulé municipal market is an astonishing building and an excellent example of classic Moorish architecture. It reopened in early 2007 after extensive renovation work.
