Faro is the capital of the Algarve region and the municipality of the same name, with a population of approximately 60,000 inhabitants spread over 210 km2, 30% of which are located in the Ria Formosa Natural Reserve.

The municipality of Faro is bordered to the south by the Ria Formosa, a 19 km long lagoon system whose barrier islands communicate with the sea through six sea inlets, five of which are natural and mobile, and one is an artificial inlet that has been opened to allow easy access to the port of Faro.
