Welcome to Baixa / Rossio

Baixa: the place to be, and the most beautiful squares in the capital: Commerce Square, Fig Tree Square and Restauradores Square.

Baixa is primarily a shopping area: there are many shops to choose from and it is the ideal place to go shopping in Lisbon.

The Baixa district was completely destroyed by the 1755 earthquake and tsunami. This part of town was rebuilt by the Marquis of Pombal. These two districts are famous for their many squares.

First, the Commerce Square, lined with buildings that house the Stock Exchange, several ministries and the baroque Triumphal Arc. In the centre stands the equestrian statue of King D. José I. This beautiful square directly overlooks the Tagus and offers stunning views of Christ the King and the 25th of April Bridge from the two monolithic pillars of Cais das Colunas.

Good to know

  • The Baixa district is considered as the city centre of Lisbon. It extends from the banks of the Tagus to Liberty Avenue (Avenida da Liberdade) and lies between the two hills that house the Alfama and Chiado districts.
  • Baixa has an impressive number of restaurants, shops and bars to meet the needs and desires of everyone – it is in our opinion the best place to spend a holiday in Lisbon.
