Welcome to Cais do Sodré / São Paulo

Cais do Sodré is a typical district of Lisbon along the multifaceted Tagus.

Sodré is the name of a 15th century family that owned businesses in this district always linked to maritime trade. Over time, the whole of the area starting from the bank of the Tagus all the way to the Rua de São Paulo has become known as “the Cais do Sodré” (the wharf of the Sodré family).

Cais do Sodre is not only a ferry terminal connecting Lisbon to Cacilhas and Almada across theTagus, but also a train and subway station and a bus and tram terminal. It connects the Tagus to the rest of the city of Lisbon.

Opposite the Cais do Sodre station is the Praça Duque da Terceira, a square named after the Duke of Terceira whose bronze statue stands proudly in its centre.

Good to know

  • The railway line from Cascais was inaugurated in December 1890 but at the time the final destination was Alcântara Mar, a town located 3 km away. The line was extended to Cais do Sodré in 1895.
  • Portugal’s official time was for many years the time displayed on the large clock outside the train station. Having marked the time since 1914, the clock was replaced in 2001.

Some figures…

  • Carcavelos Beach: 20 minutes by train (Cais do Sodré)
  • Cascais: 40 minutes by train (Cais do Sodré)
  • Airport: Humberto Delgado Lisbon Airport : 20 minutes’ drive
  • Train station: Rossio Train Station : 20 minutes’ walk

Cais do Sodré / São Paulo is located in downtown Lisbon

Cais do Sodré / São Paulo: a blend of culture in Lisbon downtown

Here, from 5 a.m., at dawn, Tuesdays to Sundays, takes place the “Mercado da Ribeira Nova”, Lisbon’s covered market. This market consists of about 50 merchants, real ambassadors for local products: fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices, olive oil, wine and other Portuguese culinary specialties … as well as flowers, meat, fish and seafood.  It has recently been converted into a “flavours market”, a hall with many restaurants catering for all tastes and events.

Later, the district is bustling with people arriving from the suburbs by train or boat from Almada on their way to work and, late afternoon, on their way home.  In the evening the atmosphere changes and the area becomes the heart of the Lisbeoan nightlife, particularly in the “pink” street (the ground is actually painted in pink!).

Here the party finishes very late (or early…) with the first train or the first ferry, or with one of the famous “Cacau de Ribeira”.

São Paulo district, known forever as an important commercial district, retains its original character.
