Welcome to Campo de Ourique / Amoreiras

Campo de Ourique/Amoreiras is a district with its own life in the heart of Lisbon. This middle and upper class residential area has a great shopping tradition and is considered as one of city’s districts with the highest quality of life.

Here, it is perfectly normal to see people greet each other, families talking a stroll and shopping. Politicians, artists and journalists live and socialise in Campo de Ourique. Located between Amoreiras, Estrela and Prazeres, Campo de Ourique was not part of the centre of Lisbon until the 18th century.

To begin, it was just a windswept hillside where workers from the factories located below in Alcantara lived. The streets of Campo de Ourique are filled with shops, cafes, bakeries, medical practices and offices.

Two tram lines, the 25 (Alfândega/Campo de Ourique) and the 28 (Martim Moniz/Campo de Ourique) make for easy travelling and give a certain charm to this district.

Good to know

  • In Campo de Ourique you will find something for all ages and tastes: day-to-day shopping or go for a stroll, drink coffee on a terrace, have a glass of wine or a good meal.
  • The French Charles Lepierre High School being close by, many French families have chosen to live in Campo de Ourique, giving the district a unique bourgeois-bohemian character.

Campo de Ourique / Amoreiras a Family friendly district of Lisbon

To get a better feel the family atmosphere of this district, visit the oldest cafes: « A Tentadora » (Rua Ferreira Borges nº 1), « Ruacaná » (Rua Almeida Sousa 31 A/B) et « O Canas » (Rua Saraiva Carvalho nº 145 A/B).

“A Garrafeira de Campo de Ourique“ (Rua Tomás Anunciação nº 29 A) is a must visit for wine lovers.

Do not miss the opportunity to visit the Santo Condestável Church, designed by the architect Vasco Regaleiro as well as the market of Campo of Ourique, built over eighty years ago and newly renovated, modernised and revitalised thanks to new small stalls designed to look like “Tasquinhas” restaurants.

It is also home to one of Lisbon’s most beautiful and quiet spot:
The Cemetery dos Prazeres (of the Pleasures) … Could you dream of a more beautiful name for a graveyard? The impression of peace and tranquility that emerges from the shadowy alleys is striking.

Another symbol of this district is the Amoreiras Shopping Centre, inaugurated in 1985. Its bold architecture designed by Master Tomás Taveira has always been a talking point. It received the Valmor Prize and the Municipal Award for Architecture in 1993. The shopping centre houses some of the world’s best brands.

A short distance away, take a stroll in the Amoreiras Garden or the Marcelino Mesquita Garden, conceived by the Marquis of Pombal and the Mãe D’Água des Amoreiras Reservoir (Praça das Amoreiras nº 10).
