The whole Albufeira coastline is an invitation to water sports such as sailing, water skiing, windsurfing and diving. The greens of the golf courses almost reaching the sea, fine golden sand beaches, often on the edge of ochre cliffs. You can also go horseback riding among the pines or mountain biking.
The city was called “castle of the sea” by the Arabs in the 8th century and is arranged like an amphitheatre overlooking the sea. From these days remain the narrow alleys, the old castle and the very white houses with their terraces and arcades.
At the time, Albufeira was a fishing village with a successful fish export industry. There is still the port near the marina, with its colourful artisanal fishing boats. The space is shared with boats for sea trips and visits to the sumptuous caves along the coast.
Today, Albufeira is a city and one of the country’s main tourist centre, with 30 km of coastline and about twenty beaches as different as they are beautiful. The municipality has a recognised reputation for nightlife and tourist facilities, but it can also rely on its quiet villages and ancient arts still practiced, such as azulejo manufacturing, copper and plaiting.

Framed by a valley that winds through steep slopes, Santo António Parque da Floresta, a golf and leisure resort, is an impressive arena that has already received the prestigious Europro Tour.
the famous Palmares Golf from Lagos organises the Amendoeiras em Flor Tournament in February, when the almond trees are covered with pink and white flowers.
Also in Lagos, the Quinta da Boavista course has sumptuous lakes and waterfalls, as well as sea views from almost every hole. The Monchique mountain range in Leste also offers a spectacular backdrop to the Golfe do Morgado and Golfe do Alamos courses.
The Meridien Penina Golf & Resort in Portimão, has an excellent course that has won many awards, making it one of the best in Europe. It was the first 18-hole course to open in the Algarve and has already hosted the Algarve Open on several occasions.
In Lagoa, the superb Quinta do Gramacho course in Carvoeiro, designed by Ronald Fream, now hosts the Algarve Ladies Open, a tournament that is part of the Ladies European Tour.
In Albufeira, the Salgados Golf Club combines lakes, waterfalls and undulating sand dunes.
