Alvor old town
Walk along the narrow cobbled streets of Alvor and discover the remains of Moorish influence. The 16th century church – the mother church – with its beautiful arches and Manueline pillars is a memorable souvenir of the past. Unfortunately, very little remains of the village’s medieval castle around which houses were built. Only one of the towers and two sections of the wall remain intact. Nevertheless, this visit is worthwhile for anyone interested in the history of the region.
The Alvor waterfront has changed a lot recently. With its cobbles and rows of palm trees and bars, this area is perfect for relaxing with an ice-cold beer and observing the work of fishermen. From there, you can take a boat trip on the river to Silves or, if you feel like more adventurous, go on an all-day excursion, including fishing and swimming. If you fancy fresh fish, go to the rescue station – follow the the smell of grilled fish!
Alvor has blue flag beaches in both the east and west, guaranteeing good water quality, cleanliness and beach safety.
On the promenade
The 3 km promenade is a pleasant and safe way for everyone to enjoy the magnificent view of Alvor’s coast.
It leads to peaceful blue lagoons and a wetland estuary; the estuary is one of the most important wildlife sanctuaries in southern Portugal and a key location for keen bird watchers. Many plants are in bloom at the end of January and, in spring, the variety of woodland flowers is an amazing sight.
At the end of the walk, you can turn back or continue east. If you choose to continue eastward, there are many restaurants and bars waiting for you. On the beach of Três Irmãos, you will find a rocky formation where you can shelter from the sun.
