Óbidos is a village in the Leiria region, located in the province of Estremadura. This century-old small town is one of the most picturesque and best preserved in Portugal. Its medieval, historical and cultural heritage is the most important in the country.
Located fairly close to the capital and high up, near the Atlantic coast, Óbidos was of strategic importance in the area. Already occupied before the Romans arrived in the Iberian Peninsula, this small town became prosperous as soon as it was chosen by the royal family. When King Denis I offered it to his wife, Isabella of Aragon, in the 13th century, it was now considered as the “house of queens” which, over the various dynasties, embellished and enriched it. This is one of the main reasons why this small town has so many churches.
More recently, the village was the scene of the preparatory meeting for the revolt on 25 April, thus being linked to the courageous and heroic movement and on 11 December 2015, UNESCO considered Óbidos as a literary city, as part of the Creative Cities Network programme.
You will appreciate Óbidos in all seasons, for the love stories that are told, for its medieval atmosphere, and for its excellent location near the sea, an ideal compromise for lovers of tranquility.
In the walls that under the setting sun take on a golden colour, you can immerse yourself in a joyful medieval environment, find a well-preserved castle and a labyrinth of winding streets decorated with old whitewashed houses with corners painted blue or yellow, decorated with bougainvilleas and honeysuckles. Manueline porticoes and small squares are also found here, including beautiful examples of the religious and civil architecture of the golden age of this locality.
Not far from there, the large expanse of sand of Praia d’El Rey, ranked among the best golf courses in Europe by Golf World magazine, is one of Portugal’s main golf destinations. Golfers can enjoy a course located between vast pine forests and rolling dunes, with spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. A few kilometres away, Caldas da Rainha, a town whose history is also linked to the “Queen’s House”, extends the beach of Foz do Arelho, which connects the Óbidos lagoon to the sea.
If you like cycling or walking, you can go from Bom Sucesso beach to the village of Óbidos via the ecological trail Várzea da Rainha (1 hour). Along the way, take a charming look at the nature that lives there. If you like birds, you will be delighted by the Patos Reais hiking trail. If you prefer to walk through history, follow the Stork’s Nest trail.
In addition to an intense cultural activity, which attracts thousands of visitors to the village every year, the municipality is a privileged place for various tourist projects.
The Óbidos lagoon is a good example of this, with the emergence of some excellent companies, some of which are considered to be of national interest.
More than an investment location, Óbidos is a municipality that is increasingly asserting itself as a brand where culture and seduction open the way to new challenges.
